Education in the Community

Despite widespread need, many patients do not know about available services. This is often related to lack of resources, limited healthcare and related services, insufficient awareness, and stigma. In response, Rays of Hope Hospice Jinja (RHHJ) educates community members about cancer and palliative care through talks at community events like funerals, radio broadcasts, and flyers. RHHJ also works with around 90 trained Community Volunteers who spread information about RHHJ and refer patients from even the most remote areas.

Overall, there is limited knowledge leading to late health seeking behavior and use of inappropriate treatments. Patients who have benefitted from our services have proven to be good advocates for early presentation and appropriate health seeking.

We also take the time to educate patients and their caregivers about their illness. Many perceive their illness as a death sentence, so we inform them about their treatment options and dispel any fears related to operations, treatments, and clinics. Our goal is to ensure that every patient is knowledgeable about their illness and therefore able to advocate for themselves.
