Clinical Palliative Care

Rays of Hope Hospice Jinja (RHHJ) provides specialized, holistic palliative care that enhances the quality of life for patients and their families with life-limiting illnesses. We are dedicated to preventing and alleviating suffering through early identification, comprehensive assessment, and the treatment of pain, as well as addressing physical, social, psychological, and spiritual needs.
RHHJ conducts regular home visits to enrolled patients, with stable patients visited monthly and sicker patients every two weeks. Clinical palliative care services aim to alleviate pain and address symptoms of life-threatening conditions. While focusing on patients, RHHJ's care teams help caregivers, ensuring they understand the necessary information for the well-being of patients between visits.
In 2024, 72% of our 1,302 patients enrolled had cancer, 7% had cancer and HIV/AIDS, 5% had severe HIV/AIDS, and 16% had other severe illnesses. 65% were female, 35% male. Children comprised 8% of patients enrolled.

Poor people in all parts of the world live and die with little or no palliative care or pain relief. Staring into this access abyss, one sees the depth of extreme suffering in the cruel face of poverty and inequality. The abyss is broad and deep, mirroring relative and absolute health and social deprivation.

The story linked below are the words of a patient, who came to Rays of Hope Hospice Jinja after he had spent 3 days at the main hospital in Kampala with out being attended to. He came back to his village, and flatly refused ever going back for treatment of the cancer he had on his left cheek.
This is when RHHJ met Stephen. His words were given to the visiting clinician and social-worker 8 months later. What Stephen expresses is what we strive to be for our patients – each and everyone of them.
