Monica

Monica has HIV/AIDS and has been a patient of Rays of Hope Hospice Jinja (RHHJ) since 2017. Monica struggles to adhere to her HIV antivirals (ARV) due to a number of socio-economic factors–the lack of transport funds to travel the long distance to access the drug compounded by the inability to access food.
When she was enrolled in RHHJ, she was supported with a monthly fund of 10,000 UGX (2.70 USD), which financed the travel expenses to refill her drugs. She was also given a monthly food basket of staples to improve her hygiene and boost her immunity. Monica was also given a mattress and bedding to keep her warm and comfortable.
However, Monica’s biggest concern was for her 15 year old son, David, who was her main care-taker and unable to go to school as a result. David was quickly enrolled in the RHHJ School Fee Program. RHHJ helped Monica get the care she needed and helped David get the education he deserved.

Two hours before Monica died in July 2020, she called RHHJ to make sure that David would continue to receive school fees even if she died. After receiving our assurance Monica was able to die in peace.

Monica will be remembered as a resilient mother who fought for her son’s education. RHHJ continues to support David through his education. He is among hundreds of kids that RHHJ has helped receive an education.

Thank you RHHJ for fulfilling the wish of a dying mother!
