Rose
Rose, a 36 year old mother, was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Before the disease progressed Rose worked in a community group, however, as the cancer spread it developed a foul smell and frequent discharge so she was forced to stop. Ray of Hope Hospice Jinja (RHHJ) found Rose in this condition– isolated and depressed.
Most cancers in Uganda go untreated. People don’t know where to go to get help, and for those that do get help it’s often too late to be curative. Rose thought she was going to die because ‘everyone who gets cancer dies within one year.’
RHHJ provided clinical care for Rose–managing her pain, discharge and the smell. We also counseled her on how to get treatment supporting her throughout the entire process. We took Rose to the Ugandan Cancer Institute where she received radiation and chemotherapy. Years later she is cancer free.
With RHHJ’s help Rose has beaten cervical cancer, a disease that causes 22% of all cancer deaths in Uganda. She’s now gotten her life back. She’s back in her community group. She sings in Church. She’s even gotten married.
Rose is a cancer warrior, and continues to volunteer her time to RHHJ to encourage others to get life saving treatment. She recently visited our main office in Jinja to thank RHHJ for saving her life. She arrived with her daughter, her 8-month-old grandson, and many generous gifts. She thanks Ray of Hope Hospice Jinja for bringing joy back into the life she now gets to live.
